On a secluded corner lot in the City of San Marino, this Modern residence was inspired by the Usonian houses of Frank Lloyd Wright of the 1930's and by the Los Angeles houses of Rudolph Schindler in its' use of planarity, space, and materials. The family of musicians required both large open common concert spaces, individual private practice refuges, and all of the other normal family living environments. Large folding doors allow the living room to expand out on to the redwood covered deck, and the long narrow lap pool and jacuzzi to the rear provide an unexpected visual surprise from the main public spaces. Smooth steel troweled stucco, redwood solid and spaced siding, and cable rails comprise the modern palette of materials. And the master bathroom, with its' sunken soaking tub and private redwood screened porch, provide a private Zen escape for the parents.
